Tata Tea may pass on firm auction prices to consumers
Economic Times – Mar 27, 2008
“We may have to pass on price
increases to consumers if auction prices rise significantly,” Sangeeta Talwar,
executive director – marketing, Tata Tea, told reporters. Tata Tea, the world’s
second-biggest branded tea firm, procures a major part of its requirement from
domestic auctions, she said. Domestic tea auction prices
hovered around Rs 67 a kilogram, industry officials said, adding rising domestic
consumption has led to a shortage. India, the world’s second
largest tea producer, is expected to consume 797 million kg in 2008, from 780

Sotheby’s to auction Sikh Guru’s body armour
Times of India – Mar 27, 2008
Only a few days ago, an
untitled work by M F Hussain fetched $ 409,000 during Sotheby’s New York spring
sales of Indian art. Meanwhile, the Sikh Guru’s inscribed steel armour plate
would be auctioned in Sotheby’s Arts of the Islamic World Sale that the auction
house has termed as the “most important of its kind the company has ever staged”
on April 9. The auction, first
of its kind offering a relic belonging to a Sikh Guru, comes at a time when the
interest in Sikh heritage among art collectors and connoisseurs of Sikh heritage
across the globe is growing, said Amandeep Singh Madra, a London-based art
historian, who specialises in Sikh art and heritage. Sikh heritage objects have
been realising impressive prices in recent times.
States, cities move to refinance debt
Forbes – Mar 27, 2008
Budgetmakers who had planned on paying around 4 percent on borrowed funds as recently as December are searching for ways to fit rates of 5 percent to 10 percent into their budgets. So far, most affected institutions appear to be withstanding the tens of millions of dollars in additional costs without laying off workers or shutting down crucial services. Still, it’s a lousy time to refinance, as many in the stampede out of the broken ‘auction-rate securities’ bond market can attest. A shrunken pool of banks willing to lend in the midst of the mortgage-related credit mess are being more selective about the bonds they choose to underwrite. There are also fewer bond insurers whose backing is worth the money, after most were downgraded because of growing losses in mortgage-backed securities. As a result, refinancing is more expensive, complicated and time-consuming than in the past. ‘A year ago, we could have issued debt without a problem in a number of different markets,’ said Tim Guenther, the chief financial officer of Pennsylvania’s student-loan agency, the second-biggest issuer of auction-rate debt this decade.
