Alitalia shares had been suspended from trading since last week, pending a statement by the company last night on its finances. The bourse decided that today’s trading would comprise an all-day pre-closing with a single auction at the close.

html LONDON – A Koran dated to the middle of the seventh century was sold for nearly 2. 5 million pounds (3. 1 million euros, 4. 9 million US dollars) on Tuesday, a world record price for an Islamic manuscript at auction. The palimpsest (parchment page), which likely originated from the Saudi city of Medina, had been estimated to sell for between 100,000 and 150,000 pounds, London auction house Christie’s said.

Some of the items auctioned include two Mitsubishi tipper trucks, Nissan UD and Bedford trucks, a pneumatic roller and two Mazda 626 sedans. In an interview on Monday, town treasurer Mr William Mandinde said the equipment could not be repaired because of a critical shortage of spare parts. The municipality engaged a private auctioneer that successfully bid for the tender.
