A Rigged Auction Derailed
Wall Street Journal
The good news is that Republican Chairman Kevin Martin’s recent attempt to rig the auction was derailed at the last minute but the same political forces will be back in the bama Administration. We say this with confidence because we’ve learned that one of the politicians lobbying Mr. Martin was none other than Barack bama’s nominee for Labor Secretary Congresswoman Hilda Solis of California. In an ctober 3 letter she urged Mr. Martin to move ahead quickly with an auction with rules that would have benefited a single company telecom start-up M2Z at the expense of other bidders.
Rescuers battle trend of ‘killer buyers’ at California auction houses
Contra Costa Times CA
Preisner co-founder and vice president of Nor-Cal Equine Rescue said she is saving all the horses she can but when small ranchers and private owners are scrambling to keep their jobs and homes more horses have no place to go and no one to care for them. Hours before bidding time at a recent Roseville livestock auction Preisner walked through the corrals and picked out horses that few would want: the old the young the untrained the race horses the stallions and the injured. Preisner said that if she didn’t buy them it’s likely they would end up being sent to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. The owners of the Roseville livestock auction said they don’t do business with so-called “killer buyers” but it’s hard for them to know what happens to horses once they leave the auction house. Nor-Cal Equine Rescue tries to find people who will feed and house unwanted horses until they die naturally. The organization’s placement rate is 95 percent but Preisner said adopting out horses is becoming increasingly difficult in today’s economy.

31 million at Christie’s. That’s Fit for the BraveThin cracks could be detected last week in the steely calm fronts that auctioneers put up during sales. Many hundreds of examples of 20th-century furniture came up for bidding at the winter design sales at four major New York auction houses before sparse crowds. Sometimes a dozen lots in a row did not sell or barely scraped past reserve prices (the minimum amounts agreed upon in advance by the sellers and the auction houses.

And she’s got less than a minute to hook the audience. If she doesn’t the bidding can bomb and the charity will suffer. “Are you ready to have an auction?” Gutierrez shouts to the more than 300 people sitting in the Four Seasons hotel ballroom. “Yeah!” they roar back. Live auctions are nothing new in the charity world. In 2007 they raised $16. 2 billion for nonprofits across the country up from the $13.
