Triceratops skull to go on auction block

The enormous skull measures 7 feet long and more than 5 feet wide across the frill. The estimated sale price is equally hefty – $240000 to $280000 according to Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries which is holding the sale. The minimum bid is $210000. “This triceratops skull is definitely among the largest and most complete ever discovered” said David Herskowitz director of natural history auctions at Heritage.

(AP) – "ld Jake" the copper weather vane that once topped Rouss Fire Hall in Winchester is one of the centerpieces of Sotheby’s New York’s upcoming "Important Americana" auction. "He’s one of the most important pieces of vernacular folk art sculpture that has come on the market ever" said Nancy Druckman director of American folk art for the auction house. Druckman’s comments are echoed by the attention the auction firm has given the weather vane. Descriptions of Winchester past and present ld Jake and Rouss Fire Company and a series of photographs cover eight pages in the Sotheby’s 260-page catalog which details items going on the auction block Jan. 23 and 24 in New York. Aside from the interior auction catalog spread ld Jake’s chest and head grace the page facing the table of contents and his silvery pointing figure is the sole decoration on the catalog’s back cover. ld Jake along with all of the other items in the auction are on exhibit at Sotheby’s from Saturday until Jan.
