Shrewd Bidders Turn Up to Drive Home a Bargain
New York Times United States
”Did this aspiring Corvette owner who declined to give his name get the bargain he was looking for? Well values are hard to pin down in the classic-car business depending heavily on a car’s condition options and history. But many dealers at the recent round of Arizona auctions said they had expected with the economy souring and credit tight lower prices this year than in boom times. At the Barrett-Jackson auction there was one Polo White ’54 Corvette consigned. The bargain-hunter was seen among the bidders but he dropped out at $80000. The car sold for $88000. Why had he quit when the price was well within his budget?“He got the idea he could do even better elsewhere” said Mr. Hagerty whom the bargain hunter had asked about values for insurance purposes.
