A special government committee has met twice to work out how to bring the items back to India a ministry of culture spokesmen told AFP. “A committee has been formed to look into this and it has submitted recommendations to the government” said the official who declined to be named. The March 4-5 auction has triggered a campaign for the return of the belongings which include Gandhi’s trademark round glasses sandals and pocket watch as well as some dishes. ne of the committee’s proposals was to approach banks and corporate firms for money to buy the pieces before the sale officials said.

The collection is expected to raise up to 300 million (about £268 million). Highlights of the sale include Piet Mondrian’s 1922 painting Composition in Blue Red Yellow and Black whose squares of saturated colours inspired Saint Laurent’s legendary 1965 shift dress; a wooden sculpture by Constantin Brancusi expected to sADVERTISEMENTell for 15 million-20 million (£13 million-£18 million); and a pair of bronze animal heads allegedly looted from Beijing’s summer palace in 1860 and that China now wants removed from the auction and returned. The lot expected to fetch the highest price is a 1914-1915 Picasso painting of a guitar Instruments de musique sur un gueridon (“Musical Instruments on a Table”) from the Spanish artist’s Cubist period. According to auction house Christie’s the work is the last large-format painting from the period still in private hands.

23 — A group of Chinese lawyers is now at work in Paris trying to stop the auction house Christie’s from selling two precious relics looted from Beijing’s ld Summer Palace. The auction of the bronze sculptures of a mouse head and a rabbit head is scheduled to take place in the French capital on Wednesday.
