“We are planning to obtain advanceinjunctions in foreign countries against possible sale or auction of Gandhiitems in future on the grounds that each such item legally belonged to theNavjivan Trust as per Gandhiji’s own will” a senior culture ministry officialsaid. Advance injunctions would be obtained in those countries whichhave major auction centres. “We want to pre-empt any auction ofGandhi items in the future by making it known that selling or buying theseheritage articles is illegal. According to our plan we will move courts in theUS UK Germany and France first” the official said.

Yet a proposed auction of his goods in New York on Thursday sparked a furor in India and nearly caused an international incident. In the end an Indian liquor and airline tycoon named Vijay Mallya stepped forward and forked over $1. 8 million to bring home a pair of round glasses sandals a bowl plate and pocket watch all of which belonged to Gandhi at one time. Mallya said he would donate the items to the Indian government which had claimed that no one had the right to profit from Gandhi and that all his goods belonged in India. Gandhi’s great-grandson Tushar Gandhi who launched a campaign against the auction as soon as he found about it in February welcomed Mallya’s move.

The Fresno-based chain — which has five Sacramento-area stores — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Jan. 14 after continuing losses and declining revenue in recent years. A bankruptcy judge approved an employee retention and executive incentive plan Tuesday along with extending the auction of the regional retailer to March 30. “We are pleased the court has extended the auction date and we continue to negotiate in good faith with potential buyers to keep Gottschalks as a going concern” said Gottshcalks chairman and chief executive officer Jim Famalette who would not comment on possible buyers and negotiations for the 58-store chain.
