Mass. fish auction challenges shutdown order

place_ad_here(“center_page”);GLUCESTER Mass. — The owners of Gloucester’s fish auction have challenged the federal government’s plans to close the auction for 10 days for allegedly keeping a false record about illegally caught cod. The auction asked a federal judge Wednesday for a preliminary injunction barring the National ceanic and Atmospheric Administration from imposing the shutdown. The sanction by the NAA was related to a 2000 charge that the Gloucester Seafood Display Auction bought nearly 21000 pounds of illegal cod then falsified 35 records to cover it up. The auction agreed in 2003 to a year of probation and a 15-day shutdown with 10 of the days suspended. But the government said the auction kept a false record while on probation in 2004.
