New £15m auction mart opens doors

Built on a 52-acre site in the north of the city it houses 400 pens three sales rings and an exhibition hall. First Minister Alex Salmond will bring the hammer down on the first sale with the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Care. About 5000 people are expected to attend the opening of the mart which replaces Perth auction mart and the Stirling operation at Kildean. The new centre located just off the A84 at Hill o’ Drip is owned by land and property developers Elphinstone who took over United Auctions in 2005.

Bidders wandered by the more than 2500 items to decide which they wanted to buy. While some people were merely browsers others came with a specific interest in mind. Antique tractor collector Ron Dahl drove from his home 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas to attend the auction. After being there for an hour he had already purchased a 1930s Caterpillar tractor. Although it was rusty and dented he said he just bought it for the parts which were in good shape. Dahl who has been refurbishing antique tractors for decades said he enjoys attending the auction and has done so for the last 10 years. “You just see average people with a similar interest” he said.

" Betty James died in November at age 90. She cofounded James Industries Inc. in Chester County in 1945 with her husband who invented the springy Slinky. James took over in 1960 after her husband left the family to join a religious cult in Bolivia.
